Stop Procrastinating Today

Tips to learn how to stop procrastinating

Figuring out how to put things off without creating a problem at work or at home seems to be a lot easier than figuring out how to stop procrastinating. Whilst acknowledging that they tend to put things off beyond a reasonably expected time, many people just have not yet learned how to stop procrastinating and start achieving goals by understanding the goal setting process. Usually, it is a simple matter of having sufficient motivation to get the job started, but it also can be caused by feeling overwhelmed and the need to take the time to figure out where to start.

The first step in learning how to stop procrastinating is to admit you have a problem. Procrastination is considered a behavioral problem, with several possible causes, among them a feeling of low self respect, believing that regardless of how well the project is completed, it will be criticized by others. This desire to put off receiving the criticism often causes them to put off working on the project. This avoidance tendency can occur in either their personal or professional life; wherever they believe their efforts will be least appreciated.

As with many behavioral issues, one of the best ways to begin learning how to stop procrastinating is to determine why starting the project is so difficult. While the tools to complete the job may be readily available, many times other tasks will direct a person's focus away from the job, such as cleaning out a drawer in the desk or wiping it down to have a clean starting spot on which to do the job.

Put Your Reasons In Writing

When the reasons why a person procrastinates are in writing, it is easy to review the reasons and erase any of them that cannot be readily justified. Once each reason has been reviewed, the vast majority of times there will be no reason to put it off any longer. This exercise can be a good starting point in learning how to stop procrastinating.

If nothing else, the individual can have that one last time putting off the job by shifting the focus to writing out the list instead of starting the job. They may even tell people they are getting ready to start the job, when in reality there is nothing for which to get ready. In order to know how to stop procrastinating it must be understood that starting a job does require any "getting ready", just "getting started".
